My sign-in link expired
Updated
Why links expire
Every link we email you stops working after a while. That is deliberate: a link that never expired would still work if the message were forwarded, left open on a shared screen, or reached the wrong inbox.
Different messages carry different windows.
| The message you opened | How long its link works |
|---|---|
| Welcome message, to set your first password | 14 days by default. Your school can set anything from 1 to 30 days. |
| Password reset, after you asked for one | 1 hour |
| Sign-in email confirmation | 24 hours from when the message was sent |
Get a new link
You do not need to ask anyone first.
- Open the link you have, even though it has expired.
- The page will say This link has expired.
- Choose Send me a new link. If we can see which address the old link belonged to, the new one goes straight there. If not, the page asks you to confirm your email address first.
- Watch for the new message and open it within the window above.
The new link replaces the old one. Once you use it, or once a newer one arrives, earlier links stop working.
If the page says the link is not valid
That is a different message, and it means something else: the link was never recognised, or it has already been used. Choose Request New Reset Link and start again with your email address.
If you have already set a password and just cannot get in, see Troubleshooting: Login Issues.
If no message arrives
Check the spam or junk folder first, then confirm you are watching the right inbox. A welcome message goes to the address your school enrolled, which is not always the one you use day to day.
Still nothing? Ask your institution administrator to resend it. They can do that for one person or for a whole section at once, without waiting for anything to expire.
